Stuart Duffin is often heralded as one of the world's leading mezzotint artists and uses the process to produce exceptional large scale works exploring the fragility of life and the influence of history. The artist's Tabula Rasa series focuses on Jerusalem and the cross-cultural spirituality of the holy city.

Additional to these mezzotints are recent etchings exploring the origins of mapmaking which feature hand-coloured maps of significance.

Born in 1959, Stuart Duffin studied at Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen, Scotland 1978 – 1982, graduating in fine art printmaking. He has been a member of staff at the Glasgow Print Studio since 1984 and has been Studio Manager from 1989 - 2002 and is currently working primarily in etching and mezzotint as the Studio Etcher.

Stuart Duffin is Fellow of the RE (Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers) and a member of the IMS (International Mezzotint Society).

Mezzotint is a technique where the artist indents thousands of tiny lines of dots into a metal plate by hand to achieve a background of dense black. Through a process of drawing with tools, the artist polishes parts of these textured areas smooth to form an image on the plate. This image is then inked with an oil based ink and printed onto paper by hand with the aid of an etching press, to produce rich, atmospheric works.
