Vincent Drane
My work is often drawing from the landscape for inspiration. My experiences of tramping, mountain biking and sea kayaking allow me to connect with this landscape in a very physical way. The process of drawing allows me to take time to also explore this same environment in a more contemplative and reflective way. These field drawings are then further developed and interpreted through the printmaking process.
I have always been fascinated by the traditional techniques of printmaking and have used a technique of wood engraving in a series of small studies of some of the beautiful bays Wellington Harbour.
Wood engraving is a traditional relief process that uses very fine sharpened tools to cut the relief design into end grain wood blocks. Oil based ink is rolled onto the blocks and a print impression is taken on unsized paper using an antique book press.
