Kim Lowe

Kim Lowe is based in Christchurch and completed her Masters of Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch in 2008. Of Chinese and Pakeha background Kim explores this territory of mixed race in works that draw on symbols of genealogy including lattices, kowhaiwhai and other visual representations of family trees. Referencing designs originally from Chinese scrolls, Kim also makes references to calligraphy and Chinese painting.

"I like the connections made between traditional printmaking processes, such as woodblock printing and the use of paper, and very early Chinese art traditions. Some of the forms used are borrowed and derived from Chinese antiquity whilst others reflect a colonial symbolism."
