Jacqui Colley: Bloom
Jacqui Colley pursues themes explored in her 2016 Residency 47 degrees South on Stewart Island, responding to the relationship between nature and human activity in our oceans and the increasing frequency of algae blooms. Her large abstract oil paintings and ink drawings form a dialogue titled Bloom. Visually an algae bloom can be a beautiful phenomenon existing in an environment with lack of containment, causing them to spread often thousands of kilometers from their source. Sometimes they are harmless but sometimes they are deadly.
