Undercurrent featuring abstracted works on paper by Belinda Griffiths and John Pusateri.
Belinda Griffiths is a painter and printmaker based in Auckland. Included in her latest body of work are both acrylics and monotypes on paper.
With her recent series Shifting Sands, Belinda explores ideas of change and transience.
She sets her figures against backgrounds that seem to slip and fragment, whilst the figures themselves shift and fade.
John Pusateri’s recent multi-layered abstract paper marbling works, explore the concept of simultaneity and infinite connection, drawing inspiration from Jorge Luis Borges’ The Aleph. Each marbled layer reflects a universe within a universe, where every detail embodies the essence of the whole.
Explosions, waves, caves, gems, birds’ beaks, canyons, columns, rocks, and flames emerge within the works, suggesting landscapes both cosmic and terrestrial. Without a fixed orientation, the pieces can be rotated, inviting viewers to uncover new perspectives and meanings. Each layer offers a sense of movement and transformation, capturing the endless interplay between chaos and structure.
These pieces transform perception into a journey, where the act of looking becomes a meditation on infinity and interconnectedness. The works challenge viewers to see beyond the surface, exploring a space where every fragment reflects the vastness of the whole.’
