For this exhibition Nuala Gregory wanted to offer a variety of works and formats – works that engage the viewer primarily through the sensation of colour and the repetition of shape and pattern, while addressing the questions of surface and form in painting. The pieces are all very recent, produced against the backdrop of the pandemic, during an unusually concentrated period of work. There are many experimental aspects that could be taken in unpredictable directions in the future.
“The idea for the exhibition was to use the medium of paint to reproduce the effect of my collage works, in which various elements are placed together, piece by piece.
The titles of the works derive from colloquial speech patterns in Ireland, where I grew up. Phrases such as ‘this here, here’ and ‘that there, there’ do not name or classify or even describe an object: they merely point to some nearby thing, indicating its location (here, there) and its particularity (this, as opposed to that). The identity of the thing is left entirely open – so that we have to look more closely to determine just what it is we are being invited to consider.” Nuala Gregory 2020
