Michele Bryant & Jonathan Brough: Going Back Again

New print and painting works from Michele Bryant and Jonathan Brough

Michele Bryant

Michele and Jonathan’s recent return to Hawks Bay informs much of Michele’s recent works. They have found rural life is strongly separated between being inside houses and the external experience of the land. The backgrounds to Michele's recent prints are influenced by textile patterns from her childhood and the interior of houses where a lot of time has been spent. Overlaying these backgrounds are symbols of the work outside, cutting and planting of trees, planes coming and going from the local airfield. Slices of wood from the family farm have also been used for sketches from childhood memories, combined with recent experiences of rural life.

Jonathan Brough

Jonathan started a suitcase series a few years ago, initially as a background for a portrait, he then realised that the geometrical shapes and colour combinations of the tower/stacks were compelling as both a visual study and also symbolic of many relocations. The scars and the tags on these cases document the dramatic process of shifting a life from one place to another.
